The Pillowman
The Pillowman at Duke of Yorks Theatre re-united Dick Straker with Matthew Dunster, Anna Fleischle and Ian Dickinson. The Projection design created the nightmare transformations for the world of the tortured children and their real and imagined trauma in a typically dark and disturbing Martin McDonagh play. A combination of animated child paintings, fairytale animations, room environments and landscapes envelope the tortured child as she relives the cause of her adult interrogation. Multi surface projection from the rear, front and side with overhead flying projectors targeting a mixture of black gauzes, serge and projection screens was integrated into the scene changes, flashbacks and set transformations.
“The ‘truth’ is elusive, as Anna Fleischle’s set, enhanced by Dick Straker’s video, melts into childhood bedrooms or shadow-stalked forests.”
The Stage
“A clever use of video design from Dick Straker and truly exceptional lighting from Neil Austin makes this a visual feast and something that remains exciting and unpredictable due to some incredibly clever staging.”
All That Dazzles
“Matthew Dunster throws in some excellent bells and whistles across the 150-minute journey – Dick Straker in particular pulls off a magnificent bout of video design at the start of the second act.”
Theatremania
“Dick Straker’s videos ingeniously blur our perceptions, contributing to the evening’s sense of profound disquiet and even moments of awkward humour.”
Jonathan Baz
“Katurian’s fictional stories are played out and blended with the real-life happenings taking place on stage. It’s brilliantly done thanks to Anna Fleischle’s set and video design from Dick Straker.”
