God of Chaos
Stan and Rosa work as ‘moderators’ for a social media company. Each day they go into battle against a rising tide of rage and smut.
God of Chaos is an outrageously funny and provocative new play about the world of online censorship. Written by Olivier-nominated playwright Phil Porter, writer of the 2016 TRP production, The Man With The Hammer.
As an unlikely romance evolves, new employee Becky is horrified by the world she encounters through her screen. She decides to take the fight into the real world. Is the war against online anger and obscenity winnable or even a good idea? Does it make the world a better place or just ‘feed the trolls’? And will the internet be our undoing or our salvation?
Mesmer created a ramshackle world of screens for the God Of Chaos stage production, sifting the depths of the internet to make blasts of noise, text and imagery that separate the scenes and give a glimpse into the sort of content the characters deal with.
Since the computers used by the cast are in view at various points, we also developed mock software they can use while performing, which we could remotely control during transitions.
“The technical team almost create another character; from the lightning quick photo and word montages which fill the screens, to the white noise between scenes and the constant flickerings of lights and monitors.” – Reviews Gate
