Big: The Musical

The story of Big, retold on stage… Josh Baskin is twelve-years-old and hates being little, until one night at the carnival the mysterious Zoltar machine grants his wish to be big.

Now trapped in an adult’s body and alone in New York, he innocently tries to find his way around a grown-up world where it’s all work and no play! Big: The Musical opened at Plymouth Theatre Royal before transferring to Dublin’s Bord Gais Theatre for Christmas 2016. The show makes use of a curved, double sided video wall of 7mm LED, able to revolve downstage to use as a scene masking or upstage as a backdrop.

We created all the screen content from a mixture of period footage of New York City, hand drawn illustration, and photo montage. Our US associates also shot in suburban New Jersey, providing footage of the neighborhoods where the iconic movie was originally filmed. All this was composited on-site and served the needs of a show with a huge number of fast-moving scenes.

Due to the technical challenges of a free-rotating video wall, the entire video system was designed to be mounted within the spinning wall, and operated wirelessly from the lighting desk.

After it’s initial run at Plymouth Theatre Royal and Dublin, the show transferred to the Dominion Theatre in the West End in October 2019.
